On November 21, Armature Works Starts With Engines and Ends With a Tree

By 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, the riverside at Armature Works will be lined with exotics, muscle cars and custom builds, and Buddy Brew will be pouring coffee for people walking the rows. By 8 p.m., the same lawn will be full of families waiting for the Heights District's holiday tree to light. Two separate events will use one property that day, with an empty stretch of afternoon between them.

That afternoon gap shapes the whole day. The morning and evening events each have their own parking terms, their own food schedule and their own transit coverage. For a Tampa Heights resident within walking distance, planning around the gap is what keeps the day easy.

The morning belongs to Rides by the River

Rides by the River is the monthly car show Armature Works holds every third Saturday at 1910 N. Ola Ave. The November date runs from 8 to 11 a.m., and it's free for all ages. Spectators don't register. You can walk in at any point during the show, and the lineup changes every month.

Parking is the part that matters most for the rest of the day. During morning shows, parking is free. Spectators use Lot 2 and Lot 3, Lot 1 is held for show vehicles, and the Heights Garage above Sprouts takes overflow when both lots fill. If you plan to show a car, the riverside Pier and Front Lawn spots require pre-registration. Lot 1 spots are first come, first served at morning shows.

Food comes online in stages instead of all at once. According to the Armature Works car-show page, the market opens at 8 a.m. on show days, and the stalls open in this order:

  1. 8 a.m.: Buddy Brew, Graze and Flan Factory
  2. 9 a.m.: Butcher n' Barbeque and Fit Bowl
  3. 9:30 a.m.: Steelbach

Provisions Coffee also serves out on the show grounds. If you only want an espresso and a lap around the cars, you don't have to go inside the market at all.

The six hours in between

The car show ends at 11 a.m., and the tree lighting starts at 5 p.m. Between those two times, Armature Works is simply a normal Saturday at a busy food hall, with no event running.

That gap is where most of the friction is. Armature Works has four guest lots. The posted rule that all lots except the 220 lot are free until 4 p.m. applies only Monday through Friday, and parking during special events and holidays varies. The car-show page says free parking applies to the morning shows, while evening car shows follow standard Armature Works rates. The free-parking terms are attached to the morning car show by name. The tree lighting is a separate special event, and it falls under the parking page's line that special-event parking varies.

Street parking is the backup. The city meters on W. 7th Ave., W. Palm Ave., Oak Ave. and N. Highland Ave. are enforced seven days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight, starting at $1.50 an hour, per Armature Works' parking page. Meter enforcement runs through both events. The Heights District garage is about one block from Armature Works, in the same building as Sprouts, F45 and Escapology.

For residents who live close enough to walk, the simplest plan is to drive to neither event. For residents who need a car, driving home after the car show and coming back on foot or by water in the evening keeps the free morning parking separate from the evening event's parking terms.

The evening belongs to the Heights District tree lighting

The Heights District Ninth Annual Holiday Tree Lighting runs from 5 to 9 p.m. The tree is lit at 8 p.m. on the Armature Works Front Lawn, the same lawn where registered show cars parked that morning. Armature Works' listing describes a holiday market with seasonal gifts from local vendors, live performances and appearances by "our friends at the North Pole." Seasonal drinks are sold to guests 21 and older, and food comes from the vendors inside Heights Public Market.

One rule at night differs from a regular visit. Outside food, drinks and coolers aren't allowed. If you're bringing children, leave snacks and drinks at home and plan to buy dinner inside.

The market's regular lineup is the dinner menu for the evening. Armature Works' Eat & Drink directory lists Butcher n' Barbeque, Champagne Porch, Chill Bros, DalMoros, Empamamas, Fit Bowl Co., Flan Factory, Graze 1910, Han Hand Roll and Ramen Bar, Juicy's, Ling's Dumplings, Muchachas, The Fold and Zukku, along with Bar AW and Buddy Brew Coffee. For a sit-down meal before the lighting, the same directory includes M.Bird, Oak & Ola, Steelbach and Stones Throw.

The night also runs well past 9 p.m. Armature Works lists the market as open until midnight on Saturday nights, Stones Throw until 1 a.m. and M.Bird until 3 a.m. The tree lighting ends at 9, but the building stays open for hours afterward.

The tree moved up the calendar

Two years ago, the tree lighting fell on a different weekend. Tampa Magazine's 2024 holiday roundup put the seventh annual Heights District lighting on Saturday, November 30, the weekend after Thanksgiving, with festivities starting at 5 p.m. and the tree lit at 7 p.m.

2024: Seventh Annual 2026: Ninth Annual
Date Saturday, Nov. 30 Saturday, Nov. 21
Relation to Thanksgiving The Saturday after The Saturday before
Event start 5 p.m. 5 p.m.
Tree lit 7 p.m. 8 p.m.
Toys for Tots drive Nov. 16 to Dec. 15 Nov. 16 to Dec. 15
Days into the toy drive 14 5

Three things follow from that move. First, the lighting now lands on the third Saturday of November, the slot Rides by the River already holds every month, so the car show and the tree share a date. Second, it comes before the Thanksgiving week, not after, so it opens the Heights District's holiday season instead of following it. Third, with the tree lit an hour later, the evening is a full three hours of market and performances before the ceremony, not two.

The toy drive's dates didn't move. In both years, the Marine Toys for Tots drop-off inside Heights Public Market runs November 16 through December 15, collecting new, unwrapped toys. This year the bin will have been out for five days by the tree lighting. The drive starts Monday, November 16, so a toy can go along on the walk to the car show that Saturday morning or to the lighting that night.

Getting there without a car

The ways to get there that don't involve parking each cover a different part of the day.

  • On foot or by bike via the Riverwalk. The Tampa Riverwalk is free, open 24 hours and runs 2.6 miles from Armature Works to Sparkman Wharf, so it works for both events.
  • By water. Pirate Water Taxi lists Stop 16 as "Armature Works / Ulele," with Friday through Sunday service from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The boats start running after the car show has ended, so the taxi doesn't help in the morning. In the evening it covers the whole tree lighting, and the service window runs 30 minutes past the event's 9 p.m. close.
  • By streetcar. The TECO Line Streetcar's stops cover Ybor City, downtown and the Channel District, with no stop at Armature Works.

Downtown also has something on the night before. Winter Village is set to open Friday, November 20, at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park along the Riverwalk, according to the Tampa Downtown Partnership. Saturday at Armature Works stays the neighborhood's own event, a short walk up the river from that opening.

A Saturday built around the gap

Put together, the day looks like this for a household on foot in Tampa Heights. Walk to Armature Works around 8:30 a.m., get a coffee from Provisions on the show grounds or from Buddy Brew inside, and walk the rows before the show ends at 11. Drop a new, unwrapped toy at the Toys for Tots bin in Heights Public Market on the way out. Go home for the afternoon. Come back after 5 p.m. for the holiday market and performances, eat dinner at one of the market's stalls, and be on the Front Lawn before 8 for the lighting. After the ceremony, Stones Throw and M.Bird stay open well past the event's close.

The car show returns December 19, the next third Saturday. The toy drive runs through December 15.
